  • SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi answered a question about trustworthiness when news is summarized by reporters. Question: Many speeches, declarations, interviews and similar cases have long texts; and the reporter is forced to summarize them. By summarizing, there is a possibility that the gap from the main text may happen and maybe a different impression is implied. Is this considered to be the breach of the trust? The Grand Ayatollah Makarem: Changing the content is considered as accusation and lie; but there is no problem in summarizing or to quote from the content. • Nigerian HR activist: Buratai should resign or Buhari must sack him

  • SHAFAQNA – Nigerian Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), on Sunday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, if the army chief fails to voluntarily resign following the revelation that he purchased properties worth $1.5m in Dubai. Falana said in a statement that despite Buratai’s commendable feat of leading the Nigerian Army to defeat Boko Haram in the North East, the war on corruption was also a must-win for the Buhari Administration. The lawyer described as a “cock and bull story” the explanation by the Nigerian Army authorities that Buratai paid for the properties in installments through his personal savings. He regretted that the name of the Nigerian Army had been “illegally” used to defend Buratai in the unfolding scam. While he condemned the involvement of the Nigerian Army in defending Buratai, he said no one had yet to explain to Nigerians how an army General could manage to save $1.5m. He added, “In view of the ban on the opening and operation of foreign accounts by public officers, the Code of Conduct Bureau should be involved in the investigation. “If the Chief of Army Staff does not deem it fit to resign forthwith President Buhari should not hesitate to remove him in the interest of national morality.” Falana commended the Buhari Administration for how it has handled cases involving military officers allegedly involved in the diversion of the sum of $15bn meant for procurement of arms. The diversion of the fund, he explained allowed the Boko Haram insurgents to kill about 25,000 Nigerians and displace two million others, including children. He also said since the administration had assured Nigerians that there would be no sacred cow in the fight against corruption, Buratai should step down and allow a full scale scale investigation by the Arms Procurement Panel and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. • Military coup in Turkey against Erdogan – BREAKING NEWS

  • SHAFAQNA – The Turkish army says it has taken power over the country and that the rule of law must remain a priority. “The power in the country has been seized in its entirety,” said a military statement read on NTV television, without giving further details. The statement added that the military aims to “reinstall the constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms,” and “to ensure that the rule of law once again reigns in the country, for the law and order to be reinstated.” “All inteational agreements and commitments will remain. We pledge that good relations with all world countries will continue,” the military statement added. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is reportedly safe and will make a televised statement soon. The country’s state news agency reports that Turkey’s chief of military staff, Hulusi Akar, is being “held hostage” at the military headquarters. A correspondent for Turkey’s state broadcaster TRT has told Reuters that soldiers are inside the broadcaster’s building. Earlier, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said an “illegal attempt” by “a group” in the military was underway in the country and security forces were taking necessary measures to resolve the situation. He said those involved in the coup attempt will “pay the highest price”. Turkish broadcaster NTV is airing footage of tanks at the entrance to Istanbul’s Ataturk airport. Gunfire can be heard across the Turkish capital of Ankara as military warplanes and helicopters are flying low over the city. Helicopters have also been flying over Istanbul, the country’s biggest city, whose Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges are reported to have been closed by military forces. • US President alters Afghanistan exit plan once more, will leave 8400 troops

  • SHAFAQNA – US President Obama said Wednesday that he planned to leave 8,400 American troops in Afghanistan until the end of his term. During a press briefing at the White House on Wednesday, Obama said that he would leave behind 8,400 American forces by the year-end, nearly 3,000 more than what he had promised last year. Currently around 9,800 US troops are in Afghanistan, reportedly training Afghan forces to battle militant groups such Daesh and the Taliban. “The security situation in Afghanistan remains precarious,” Obama said a day before heading to Poland to attend a NATO summit and meet with leaders of other nations engaged in Afghanistan. “We have to deal with the realities of the world as it is. We can’t forget what’s at stake in Afghanistan. This is where al-Qaeda is trying to regroup, this is where ISIL continues to try to expand its presence,” said the president, who was flanked by Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford. Obama said last October that he would keep 9,800 troops in Afghanistan through 2016 and slash the level to 5,500 upon leaving office in January 2017. Having failed to deliver on his campaign promise of ending the war by then, Obama now seems willing to put the fate of America’s longest-running war in the hands of his successor. “The decision I’m making today ensures that my successor has a solid foundation for continued progress in Afghanistan as well as the flexibility to address the threat of terrorism as it evolves,” Obama said, adding that the situation in Afghanistan directly affects America’s safety. • Nigeria: President urged to protect annual Al-Quds rally

  • SHAFAQNA – IHRC has written to the Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari to raise conces about information it has received that the Nigerian Army will be out in force at the annual Al Quds Day rally on Friday 1 July 2016. The army’s presence is of grave conce since the rally is led by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), members of whom have been repeatedly targeted by the armed forces. Over three days in December 2015 more than 1000 people were killed as well as property and religious spaces destroyed by the armed forces in Zaria. Leading members of the movement were shot and imprisoned without charge. The assault over two days in the northe Nigerian city left a trail of bloodshed and destruction including the shooting of the movement’s leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat. Both remain in the custody of the Nigerian intelligence services, detained without charge. Earlier this year IHRC called on the Inteational Criminal Court to open a preliminary enquiry into the events in Zaria last year in which soldiers attacked the Islamic Movement of Nigeria’s (IMN) supporters, symbols and property. There is a history of attacks against IMN, especially during the Al Quds Day rally. In 2014 soldiers attacked the al-Quds Day procession in Zaria, Kaduna State, killing 32. In 2009 four people were killed and several injured when police opened fire on civilians, also in Zaria. Following the December 2015 attacks against IMN, the state govement in Kaduna set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry (JCI) but human rights organisations, including IHRC, believe it is not sufficiently independent and impartial to be able to hold those responsible to account, nor is there any reasonable prospect of any prosecutions. This lack of accountability has the potential to create an environment where such horrific deaths are acceptable, and that IMN are easy targets. This means that Al Quds Day on Friday poses multiple risks, particularly with the perpetrators of the crimes – the Army , ...ادامه مطلب

  • Why bad news about one Muslim American is bad news for all Muslims

  • SHAFAQNA – On the moing of June 12, as details emerged from a shooting at an Orlando nightclub, Muslim Americans across the country likely reacted with horror, while secretly hoping that the shooter wouldn’t tu out to be one of them. Many had gone through the same roller coaster of emotions after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and the San Beardino shootings. Muslim Americans have become accustomed to this patte whenever there’s an attack with a Muslim perpetrator. Media outlets will debate whether or not Islam justifies violence, while sounding alarm bells about the extent of homegrown radicalism. At the same time, politicians and pundits trumpet policies restricting the civil liberties of Muslim immigrants and citizens. As a media psychology researcher, I’ve studied how media representations of Muslims fuel anti-Muslim hostility and policies in America. Because so few Americans personally know Muslims, media depictions of them as terrorists are especially potent, leading many to believe that all Muslims are terrorists. The power of media Even in coverage unrelated to terrorist attacks, Muslims get a bad rap. Content analyses of Muslim representations in cable news, television and movies, and newspapers reveal that Muslims in American media are overwhelmingly represented as violent, terrorists, barbaric and intolerant. At the same time, there are almost no positive portrayals of Muslims in American media. According to social psychologists, contact with “outgroups” – social groups that we don’t identify with – can reduce prejudices. But when direct, positive contact is limited or nonexistent, studies have shown media representations of outgroups have an even greater influence on our attitudes toward members of those groups. Since Muslims make up only one percent of the U.S. population, most Americans don’t interact with them on a daily basis. This means that what they see on the news will largely influence how they perceive Muslim Americans. A fe, ...ادامه مطلب

  • UK newspapers urge readers to vote to leave EU: Study

  • SHAFAQNA – Britain’s leading daily newspapers are urging their readers to vote to quit the European Union in the June 23 EU referendum, academics have found. Loughborough University researchers have taken a forensic look at 1,127 news stories published by ten top daily papers since the start of May, and found the “Leave” campaign commands 82 percent of the national daily newspaper readership. The analysis suggests that The Daily Express and Daily Mail are the “least balanced” in covering the issue, while The Guardian, The Timesand The Financial Times have provided a more “balanced or neutral discussion.” The findings come as media tycoon Rupert Murdoch’s The Sunnewspaper – Britain’s best-selling daily newspaper – called on its readers on Monday to vote to quit the 28-member EU. Many analysts thought the position was largely predictable based on perceptions that the paper is anti-EU. “The Sun urges everyone to vote Leave. We must set ourselves free from dictatorial Brussels,” said the tabloid. However, The Sun’s coverage of the EU referendum campaign has been among the most “balanced” of all national newspapers, according to academics. The Sun sells close to two million copies a day and has long been critical of the EU. Polls in the UK show increasing support for Britain to exit the EU, or Brexit. Britain’s “Leave” campaign opened up a 7-point lead over “Remain,” an opinion poll showed late Monday. The “Leave” camp held 46 percent support compared with 39 percent support for “Remain,” according to the YouGov poll. Undecided voters were 11 percent, while 4 percent said they will not vote. Other polls published on Monday also put “Leave” ahead. The UK will hold a referendum on June 23 on whether the country should remain a member of the 28-member bloc. Membership of the EU has been a controversial issue in the UK since the country joined the then European Economic Community in 1973. Those in favor of a withdrawal from the EU argue that outside the bloc, London would b, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Sheikh Zakzaky’s son: Nigerian government responsible to protect all citizens

  • SHAFAQNA – As usual, since the Zaria massacre, I used to send messages to our brothers and sisters, so today, I would like to use this opportunity to once again condole with all the people who have fallen victim to this barbaric crime committed by the Nigerian army, that has affected hundreds of families, and continues to do so to this day. May God accept the dead as martyrs, give them strength and perseverance, and a speedy recovery to the injured. I would also like to thank the large number of people in their millions around the world who have not only shown sympathy and kindness but also acted in numerous ways in support of our plight. I would however like to draw the attention of the members of the Islamic movement to certain important issues regarding the current adversity we are going through, there is need for all of us to excercise caution when it comes to our utterances and actions, when it comes to spreading our messages on social media. There are certain salient issues that require a great deal of introspection. We should not under any circumstance spread messages that are capable of flaming the embers of violence in the society. It is imperative to weigh in the impacts of what one is about to write even if the message is relevant to our activism, as every member movement must realize that he is a defacto ambassador of the movement to the world. This means that every thing we choose to write can and would most likely be taken as the opinion of the millions of our brothers and sisters, rather than the emotional out burst of a single person. And could be twisted by the enemies who are more than happy to perpetuate the negative light in which they our enemies are trying to paint us. I would like to therefore reiterate that the Islamic Movement in Nigeria is a nonviolent movement, whose message is one of change for the better. We should under no circumstances be found resorting to spreading messages of hatred or intolerance. The use of abusive language shoul, ...ادامه مطلب

  • President Sisi vows to punish Muslim mob over Christian woman attack

  • SHAFAQNA – Muslims who attacked and stripped an elderly Christian woman in a southe Egyptian village will be punished, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said Monday. The Muslim mob in Minya province’s Karma village had also torched and looted seven houses of Christian families during the May 20 attack, which was triggered by a rumour that the 70-year-old woman’s son was having a relationship with a Muslim woman. The elderly woman was paraded on the streets of Karma after being stripped. Sisi said such attacks divide Egyptians. “We are all one and the law must take its course,” Sisi reportedly said. The attack which quiet rightly prompted widespread outrage is sadly symptomatic to Egypt’s descent into religious fascism. Under the influence of Wahhabism, and Salafism Egyptians are being taught to abhor all other religious denominations – both within and without Islam. Such intolerance is now being played in the cold light of day. Although many will see in such an attack the hand of Islam, it is important to remember that such violence is the product of hate and ignorance. Radicalism in fact is the embodiment of vengeful ignorance and arrogance. Islam, which calls on men and women to be the best version of themselves does not profess religious ostracization, and harassment – it stands of religious freedom, equity, and justice. Of course Wahhabi Islam has a very different interpretation of religious freedom … under Wahhabism only Wahhabism stands worthy. The violence carried by Wahhabism has now infiltrated Egypt, and warped Muslims’ principles and sense of religious duty. There is nothing glorious about targeting an innocent, and defenseless elderly Christian woman. What crimes did she commit to deserve to be paraded naked in the streets of her city? None of course … no crimes could ever warrant such a sick display of chauvinism. Christians comprise 10 percent of the Egyptian population, which is dominated by Muslims. Following the attack, the Coptic Orthodox Church lash, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Zaria Massacre: Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Nigerian President Buhari

  • SHAFAQNA – I was motivated to write this article due to the recent statement of the Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir on #Yemen in an interview with the French newspaper Le Figaro. Al-Jubeir said that the priority of the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen is not to fight the Iranian-backed Houthi freedom fighters but to contain #AlQaeda and #ISIS. Al-Jubeir added: “The two organizations Al-Qaeda and Daesh are terrorist organizations. However, the Houthis are Yemenis and are our neighbors with whom one can hold talks.” In Tweets on his page on Twitter, Al-Jubeir said “whether we disagree or agree with the Houthis, they remain a part of the social fabric of Yemen”. The Saudi regime assumed this new position due to its repeated defeat by the Houthi Ansarullah freedom fighters in Yemen and its monumental failure to achieve any of its objectives. If the Saudi regime agreed that “Houthis are Yemenis and are our neighbors with whom one can hold talks” then why not hold talks from the beginning? Why did the Saudi regime assembled a coalition to attack Yemen that included 10 Arab regimes and Senegal from Africa combined with massive supports from the US and UK? Why did the Saudi regime spent more than 100 billion Dollars for the aggression against Yemen if it knows that talks can solve disagreements? And why did the Saudi-led coalition killed close to 10,000 Yemeni civilians and destroyed the country’s infrastructures and historical sites if talks and negotiations from the beginning can resolve the disagreements? The right conclusion is that the Saudi regime assumed this new position due to its gross failure to realize its objectives through the war it imposed on Yemen, its present pathetic financial state and the growing discontent and dissent in Saudi Arabia. It is an open secret that the Saudi and its allied forces fought alongside AlQaeda and ISIS in Yemen against the brave and courageous Houthi freedom fighters but now they claimed they want to concentrate on the fight a, ...ادامه مطلب

  • London Protesters Demand Justice For Zaria Massacre Victims During Buhari Visit

  • [embedded content] SHAFAQNA – The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) staed a protest and vigil for Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky in London, where President Muhammadu Buhari attended an anti-corruption summit. The aim of the protest is to call attention to the Zaria massacre, in which over 350 Shiite Muslims were killed by the Nigerian military, and the abuse and unlawful detention of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN). The massacre, took place between December 12 and 14, 2016, by Nigerian army against hundreds of unarmed members of the Islamic Movement. President Buhari and top military leaders have not taken meaningful legal action connected to the Zaria massacre to date, which has sparked outrage among the Muslim and non-Muslim communities around the world. The Kaduna State govement established an apparent Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the incident, but thus far, no concrete steps have been taken to hold the perpetrators of the massacre accountable. IHRC is hoping that its protest will pressure the Buhari administration and Nigerian military to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring justice to the families of the victims. • Zaria Massacre: Nigerian Army trying to do the ImpossibleSHAFQNA

  • SHAFAQNA – The brutal Zaria massacre by the Nigerian army that killed close to 1000 defenseless and unarmed Nigerians will go down in history as the most barbaric, inhuman and wicked mass-murder that was masterminded and executed by the highest-ranking Nigerian govement officials to serve an evil foreign imperialist agenda that has the savage Saudi regime as a front. After the Zaria massacre various events unfolded but the two important happenings that occured in the same week changed the dynamics of the brutal Zaria massacre by the Nigerian army that killed close to 1000 defenseless and unarmed Shia Muslims last December;the public confession by the Kaduna state Goveor Nasir Elrufai via his officials at the Judicial Commission of Inquiry (JCI) that he in connivance with the Nigerian Army buried 347 Shiites killed by the Nigerian army in Mando in a single mass grave and the comprehensive and damning report on the Zaria massacre by the London-based human rights body Amnesty Inteational that detailed the heinous crimes and atrocities committed by the Nigerian army. After the occurrence of these two happenings the Nigerian army that is a front for the Nigerian President Buhari who from credible information ordered the inhuman Zaria massacre, the corrupt Northe Nigerian elites and the bloodthirsty Nigerian Wahhabi clerics, went on the defensive to limit the damages done by these important revelations. Before then they were sponsoring mushroom “human rights groups” to organize protest to the Iranian Embassy and to try to link the peaceful Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) under the leadership of His Eminence Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky to terrorism and violence. They launched a massive smear campaigns of calumny and demonization to portray the peaceful #IMN as a “violent extremist group” that should be proscribed and banned. Then these disclosures occurred and the dance of Shame of the masterminds and perpetrators of the Zaria massacre changed as confusion, division and pan, ...ادامه مطلب
