Houthi forces capture Saudi border points

  • SHAFAQNA – The Houthi forces, backed by the Yemeni Republican Guard, seized a number of points inside the Midi Desert near the Saudi-Yemeni border today, advancing as far north as the Jizan Region of Saudi Arabia. According to Al-Masdar’s Yemen War correspondent, Tony Toh, the Houthi forces and their allies killed 41 fighters from the Saudi-led Coalition on Monday after seizing a number of sites from the latter. Making matters worse for the Saudi-led Coalition, the Houthi forces continued their advance in the Najran Valley, as they captured new points near the provincial capital. The Saudi-led Coalition’s recent losses in the Jizan and Najran regions has taken a toll on their morale, as they struggle to beat back the anti-govement forces invading the southe part of their country. • What’s It’s Like Being a Syrian Muslim Who Feels Ignored by the West

  • SHAFAQNA – I’ve changed my profile picture on social media many times since terror came in horrific waves, drowning the world in sorrow over the last year. But I could only use the official Facebook profile filter to show solidarity for Paris since a filter wasn’t available for Aleppo, Lahore, Istanbul, or many other attacks. I am a Syrian Muslim living in Dubai; I lost my home in Damascus at the beginning of the Syrian war in 2011. It saddens me when I read on Facebook that someone on the other side of the world thinks that because of who I am and where I live, I’m used to bombs and terror and therefore not as worthy of sympathy. Maybe that’s because the West is a place where war has been a foreign concept and red is the color of nothing but love. But let’s be clear: the sound of bombs and bullets will never be something I become immune to. I have also read comments on social media that suggest that since ISIS claims they are “Muslim,” all Muslims are bad. • Turkey permits Muslim policewomen to wear hijab on duty

  • SHAFAQNA- Female police officers in Turkey will now be able to wear a headscarf as part of their uniform, according to a new ruling published on Saturday. Turkey’s Official Gazette carries a new rule which will allow policewomen to wear a headscarf under their caps or beret on condition it be the same color as the uniform and without a patte. Back in 2013, then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan introduced the lifting of headscarf bans in Turkey’s civil service as part of a broader democratization package. Elsewhere, Police Scotland recently announced that the hijab would become an optional part of its uniform to encourage more female Muslims to consider policing as a career option. Muslim women police in London have been permitted to wear a hijab for the past decade. • Amir Khan’s Muslim trainer Tam Khan banned from Facebook after he blasts British Islamic extremists in furious post

  • SHAFAQNA – A Muslim mixed martial arts fighter – who trains boxing champ Amir Khan – has slammed British Islamic extremists as “uneducated monkeys” in a heated social media rant. Tam Khan has urged all Muslims living in Britain to “respect” the country’s  culture and traditions – and says anyone who doesn’t should be thrown out. Tam Khan, pictured with boxing world champion Amir Khan, has told Muslims to ‘stop becoming militants and extremists’ The MMA fighter tued entrepreneur has waed that fellow Muslims must intervene “We need to fix this epidemic of inbreds from doing these despicable crimes,” he told his 6,000 Facebook followers. “Sorry I don’t care if you think I’m being harsh. “Islam is a beautiful religion, but these uneducated monkeys misinterpret things and feel they are acting on God’s behalf and it’s only getting worse.” Days after the furious post gathered 148,000 likes and 126,000 shares, Facebook waded into the debate by deleting Mr Khan’s social media account. But it was quickly restored after Facebook claiming the action was a “mistake”. The famous fighter, who says he has never suffered from racism or Islamophobia, felt compelled to speak out after seeing some Muslims “milk the benefit system, free education and health services – yet complain”. He urged Muslim leaders to educate their community and “fix this s**t” after noticing a change in attitude between his British and Muslim friends over the past decade. “We do have a problem with our community and so-called ‘Muslim’ brothers,” he said. • 8,000 Syrian refugees enter US

  • SHAFAQNA – The United States has welcomed 8,000 Syrian refugees so far and will settle 2,000 more by the end of September, a US official says. “We can now say we have welcomed 8,000 Syrian refugees so far this year and we are very confident we will welcome at least 10,000 refugees from Syria by the end of this fiscal year,” Anne Richard, assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, said in a conference call with reporters Friday. Up until April, some 1,300 had been settled in the country and the US State Department said it was way behind the projected schedule that was first set by President Barack Obama last September. On July 12, Secretary of State John Kerry said that the procedure for Syrian refugees is different from that for others who wish to immigrate to the United States. “Those are refugees, which is different from normal process of migration and green card and becoming a citizen and so forth. It’s a very different category,” Kerry said. “It’s also representing six-fold increase over what we did the year before.” However, activists have criticized the Obama administration for acting too slowly to settle the refugees mostly because of an extensive, months-long screening process aimed at preventing anyone with links to terrorist networks, including Daesh. The US govement has rejected approximately 7 percent of applications under its Syrian refugee program, while another 13 percent is being held up by “outstanding conces,” according to Leon Rodriguez, director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services. Obama’s plan has also come under attack by his opponents, who have been waing of the implications for national security. On April 14, US House Speaker Paul Ryan denounced Obama’s refugee program, citing a lack of adequate screening that puts the country at risk of terrorism. Also, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has said “a lot” of Syrians accepted for asylum in the US are members of Daesh. Trump said the num, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Spectre of hunger keeps Syrian refugee children out of school

  • Inteally displaced children attend a class inside a cave in the rebel-controlled village of Tramla, in Idlib province, Syria March 27, 2016. REUTERS/Khalil Ashawi SHAFAQNA – With just 60 days to go before the start of the new school year, hundreds of thousands of Syrian parents are faced with the stark choice of whether to feed their children or send them to school, experts said on Wednesday. Nearly 1 million Syrian refugee children are out of school in Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan which host the vast majority of the nearly 5 million refugees created by Syria’s civil war. Many Syrian children are forced to work to help make ends meet, or unable to pay for transport to school, according to a report written by the head of the London-based think tank, Overseas Development Institute (ODI). In February, donors pledged $1.4 billion to help host countries provide education for all Syrian refugee children in Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan. About $1 billion of this has not yet been delivered, according to the report published on Wednesday. More funds are also needed to help families cover food and other basic costs, ODI Executive Director Kevin Watkins said. “If you’re a parent faced with a choice of giving your children a square meal at the end of the day, or paying for the transport … to send them to school … you’re likely to make a choice in favor of adequate nutrition,” Watkins said in an interview. Poverty levels among Syrian refugees have increased sharply since the start of Syria’s civil war in 2011, as rental charges, rising food costs and spending on healthcare and heating have eaten into the savings of refugee families. More than half of the 1 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon cannot afford enough food, and some 70 percent live on less than $115 per month, the country’s poverty line, ODI said. Nearly 90,000 Syrian refugees in school in Lebanon may lose their places because of lack of funding, the report said. Lebanon’s minister for education, Elias Bou Saab, urged donor, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Broken Promises for Syria’s Children

  • SHAFAQNA – If you ever lose faith in the power of hope, not to mention the importance of never giving up, remind yourself of the story of Mohammed Kosha. A 16-year-old Syrian refugee living in Lebanon, Mohammed has overcome obstacles that most of us cannot even imagine, in order to excel in his education. World leaders should take note. Four years ago, Mohammed and his family fled their home in the town of Darya, a suburb of Damascus, to escape relentless bombardment by Syrian armed forces. Having already lost a year of primary education in his hometown, where it was simply too dangerous to attend school, he then spent another year out of the classroom when the family arrived in Lebanon, where they now reside. Mohammed’s life changed when Lebanon’s govement opened the country’s public schools to refugees. Classes were not only crowded; they were also conducted in English, meaning that he would have to lea a new language. But Mohammed seized the opportunity to lea, and threw himself into his studies. Last month, against all odds, he scored the second-highest marks in Lebanon’s Brevetsecondary-school exam. And he is not done yet. Mohammed knows that education is the key to building a better future. In his words, “Leaing gives us hope.” If only world leaders had even a fraction of his wisdom. There have been some encouraging signals. At a meeting in London in February, inteational donors recognized the importance of education for refugees, promising to get all of Syria’s refugee children into school by the end of 2017. They even pledged $1.4 billion to achieve that goal. It was an ambitious promise to a group of highly vulnerable children. Today, about one million Syrian refugee children aged 5-17 – roughly half the total – are out of school. And most of those who are in school will drop out before starting their secondary education. In the space of a single primary-school generation, Syria has suffered what may be the greatest education reversal in history. Enrollme, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Europe should ignore Turkey’s ‘visa blackmail’ over refugee deal – German vice chancellor

  • SHAFAQNA – It depends on Ankara whether Turks will enjoy visa-free travel to Europe, Germany’s vice chancellor has said, adding that it was the right decision to ban a live broadcast by the Turkish president to a rally in Cologne on the weekend. “It is up to Turkey if there is or there isn’t visa liberalization,” Reuters quoted German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel as saying while on an official visit to northe Germany. “Germany and Europe should under no circumstances be blackmailed,” Gabriel added. The vice chancellor also welcomed the move by Germany’s highest court to block a livestream address by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to a rally of Turkish nationals in Cologne on Sunday. On Monday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Ankara would back out of the migrant agreement with the EU if Brussels failed to deliver on its promises of a visa-free travel regime for Turks by October. “All that is dependent on the cancelation of the visa requirement for our citizens, which is also an item in the agreement of March 18,” Cavusoglu said, as cited by German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Although no special date for visa liberalization has been set, “it could be the beginning or middle of October,” Cavusoglu added. The comprehensive EU-Turkey refugee deal, which came into force on March 20, requires that Turkey take back all illegal migrants and refugees entering Europe via its territory in exchange for speeding up EU accession and allowing Turkish citizens to travel to the EU without a visa. The visa-free agreement was initially planned to be introduced by July, but Turkey has failed to comply with all of the EU’s 72 criteria, including relaxing its stringent anti-terrorism legislation, which became a sticking point in the negotiations. The deal also involved exchanging migrants and refugees already living on Greek islands for others living in Turkish refugee camps. “For every Syrian readmitted by Turkey from the Greek islands, another Syrian w, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Unearthing Turkey’s political fault-lines – Failed coup or warning

  • SHAFAQNA – As I write these lines much of the world media community is still attempting to work its way through the maze of information, misinformation and potential geopolitical repercussions Turkey’s attempted, and failed coup will likely bring in its wake. As bloggers, political analysts and various pundits have ferociously attempted to rationalize, label, and let’s say it sanitize Turkish President Erdogan’s retu to power, I fear we stand all collectively clueless … at least when it comes to those hands which in the shadow orchestrated Turkey’s change in leadership. How many of us can say they truly saw it coming? I’m not discussing here whether or not the military coup was justified, or even necessary; I’m referring to the proverbial writing on the wall. From where I’m standing Turkey’s attempted coup d’état came out of nowhere. I will grant you that the element of surprise was most likely what those renegade generals were going for, but still, this particular coup feels off … I will venture and say that Turkey has not yet seen its fill of unrest. I personally can’t shake the feeling that we all are being politically set up. While I will happily admit that my opinion might not matter that much in the great scheme of things, I will nevertheless argue that honesty and pragmatism have thoroughly lack so far. Safe from the input of a few of my esteemed colleagues, among whom Andrew Korybko and Marwa Osman, most so-called analysts have screamed banalities, while fanning old-seated political bigotries … did I mention gas-lighting? Seriously now, has anyone noticed how uncharacteristically cool and collected NATO powers have been in the midst of such a gargantuan political racket? Can we please remember how instrumental Turkey is to Weste powers when it comes to geopolitical projection? – notwithstanding the fact of course that the United States houses some its nuclear arsenal on Turkish soil (Incirlik base). With this in mind are we to believe that Washington failed, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Doctors Without Borders fears famine in northeast Nigeria

  • SHAFAQNA – Severely malnourished children are dying in large numbers in northeast Nigeria, the former stronghold of Boko Haram militants where food supplies are close to running out, Medecins Sans Frontieres said on Wednesday. The medical charity, also known as Doctors Without Borders, urged the United Nations to set up emergency food transports to the area, where up to 800,000 civilians have been cut off for over a year, it said “The situation is a large-scale humanitarian disaster…. There is a vital need to have a food pipeline in place to save the population that can be saved,” MSF general director Bruno Jochum told a news briefing. “We are talking at least about pockets of what is close to a famine.” Under military escort, a MSF team delivered some 40 metric tonnes of food last week to Banki, a town of 12,000 near the Cameroon border, including emergency supplies for more than 4,000 children. It vaccinated children against measles, which can be deadly in under-fives. The U.N.’s World Food Programme (WFP) also delivered 30 metric tonnes of food and other items there last week, in a cross-border operation from Cameroon. The U.N. says 3 million people in the northeast are in urgent need of food aid, but that some roads within Nigeria are unsafe for convoys due to mines. “It is a situation of complete destitution, with hardly anything to eat,” said MSF emergency programme director Hugues Robert who was part of the team in Banki. “What is extremely shocking is the level of severe acute malnutrition.” MSF, which carried out a rapid survey of the population in Banki, estimates “extremely high mortality rates of approximately four per 10,000 people per day – four times the emergency threshold,” the agency said in a statement. In the town of Bama, MSF teams estimate that 15 percent of children are suffering from life-threatening malnutrition. “Probably the medical and epidemiological indicators are the worst we are facing today in the world,” said Jochum.
