SHAFAQNA-Do you know what your tears look like at a microscopic level? Dutch artist Maurice Mikkers does, and he’s been looking at hundreds of them. It seems that our tears can be as unique as snowflakes, and have a similar crystallised look under a microscope. Mikkers was a lab technician before he went to art school, and has yet to find two tears that look alike. He’s also investigating how temperature, humidity, and even the cause of the crying can influence a tear’s structure. “[A] dark field microscope will light up the tear on a black background, so you can actually see the beautiful pattes and shapes,” Mikkers says in the Quartz video above. “I think tears are so unexplored. We need ...

SHAFAQNA IN COLLABORATION WITH FORT RUSS –The most important information event of Friday was Vladimir Putin’s interview with Bloomberg, in which the Russian president touched on key issues on the global information agenda. I am sure that dozens of publications are going over this interview and discussing every question and answer in it, but I want to propose to you, dear friends, to look at this from a different angle. The point is that John Micklethwait, the editor-in-chief of Bloomberg who interviewed the Russian president, is not merely a joualist, but one of many joualists who has participated for many years in meetings of the Bilderberg Club as a full member of this shadow interest gr...

SHAFAQNA –With growing conces over national security, and the increased threat of those wishing to divide us, there has been recent public discussion about the future of our immigration program, and whether the values and customs of some migrant groups have a place in the Australian way of life. Negative attitudes towards Muslims in Australia seem to be based on a fear of the unknown, and this perceived difference in values and culture. Attributes we typically identify as integral to the Australian way of life – like our freedom and democracy – are commonly perceived as being at odds with Islam. It raises an interesting question – can Australian Muslims maintain their customs and traditions...

SHAFAQNA- Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the biggest scourges there is among infectious diseases, killing nearly 2 million people a year, most in developing countries. It is also notoriously hard and slow to detect in places without top-flight health care systems. Yesterday, researchers reported at the American Chemical Society (ACS) meeting here that they’ve devised a simple new way to diagnose TB, and even distinguish living TB cells from dead ones, which could give doctors an easy way to see whether their anti-TB medications are working. The researchers are now putting their diagnostic through its paces with samples from patients in South Africa, which has one of the world’s highest incidenc...

SHAFAQNA-Since the influence of friend of man is very deep, Islamic teachings have given an important status to the friendship. In Holy Quran it is stated that most of the companions of the Fire will say, in the Hell, that “Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that one as a friend. He led me away from the remembrance after it had come to me. And ever is Satan, to man, a deserter.” [1] So it is very important to know how your friend is. In this regard, there is a very nice hadith in which Imam al-Baqir (PBUH) said: My father Ali Ibn al- Hussein (A), once, advised me: ‘O son, do not associate, talk, or accompany five classes of people.’ ‘Who are they, father?’ asked me, and he (A) answered: ...

SHAFAQNA –Over the weekend, people tweeted an offer to their Muslim neighbors: #IllWalkWithYou. The hashtag spread quickly as Muslims around the country reeled from the news that two Muslim men were fatally shot blocks from their Queens mosque on Saturday afteoon. The murders of Imam Maulama Akonjee, 55, and his assistant Thara Uddin, 64, are under investigation. Although police have not determined a motive in the killings, the Muslim community feels strongly that the men were targeted because of their religion. They fear that the intensifying anti-Muslim rhetoric in the presidential campaign will only lead to more hate crimes. But in a remarkable show of solidarity, thousands of people ar...

SHAFAQNA –Following a series of violent attacks by militants whom have claimed to be loyal to Daesh, aka ISIL, France has been looking for effective counter-terror measures to protect both its citizens and its way of life. While many, most of all the French might have expected measures in tune with the gravity of the situation, David Lisnard, the mayor of Caes (seaside Mediterranean town) chose to legislate over fashion to curb radicalism. Starting this August, Caes will no longer allow for Muslim women to wear the burkini – Islamic swimsuit; a decision which officials have promised will help promote and protect France secular traditions. Shafaqna asked Mayor David Lisnard to elaborate on t...

SHAFAQNA –Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, especially with regards to protecting women, has often been called into question. Although women’s rights have been incrementally extended in recent years – they were allowed to vote in municipal elections for the first time last year – their actions are still severely restricted. In a country where a woman caot even open a bank account without her husband’s permission, here are several other things they are still unable to do: Drive a car There is no official law that bans women from driving, but deeply held religious beliefs prohibit it, with Saudi clerics arguing that female drivers “undermine social values”. In 2011, the “Women2Drive” campai...

SHAFAQNA-Spiritual fluctuation is one of the characteristics of our hearts. Our soul is also called ‘Qalb’ (heart) because it changes from time to time, one day and on one occasion and under certain circumstances we may feel more spiritual, and then we may feel low. One of the main reasons for that is that our heart is like a metal and hell & heaven are like magnets attracting these metals. When we are in the magnetic field of Dunya (Satanic worldly fields) naturally our spirituality diminishes, and likewise when you are in the heavenly fields you feel more spiritual. Depending on how often and for how long we hold our hearts in the magnetic fields of Dunya or Akhira we develop a hell or...

Orly Beauty has created a nail polish called Breathable, whichis a three-in-one polish, including a base coat, the colored nail vaish, and a top coat. SHAFAQNA –As Poland prepares to welcome Pope Francis for World Youth Day a statement from the Vatican has denounced an “artificially created fear of Muslims” in the country which it says is being fed by some political parties. The press release, written by a spokesman for the country’s bishops’ conference but distributed by the Holy See’s press office, says fears have been exacerbated by a lack of public debate, complicated migration procedures and no public programme of teaching people in the country Polish about di...
